The PlaneWave CDK550 Telescope System f/7.77 consits of the CDK20 Astrograph f/7.77 and the L-550 Direct Drive Mount with integrated high resolution encoders and high speed slewing. The Telescope System is a sophisticated solution designed for the serious astrophotographer and dedicated astronomy researcher. The L-550 carries a greater payload capacity – perfect for holding a second telescope on the outside hub.
The 20" CDK is a telescope optical system that is designed to excel at imaging on large format cameras while remaining an excellent instrument for visual use.
One of the unique features of the CDK design is its ease of collimation and achievable centering tolerance for a telescope of its class. This assures the user will get the best possible performance out of the telescope. The end result is a telescope which is free from off-axis coma, off-axis astigmatism, and curvature of field, yielding a perfectly flat field all the way out to the edge of a 52mm image circle.
The off-axis image quality surpasses that of most commercial optical designs, including Ritchey-Chrétien. The RMS spot size at the extreme corner of the 35 mm full-frame format is smaller than a single pixel of today’s common large-format cameras. The CDK20, with its longer back focus, is a half-meter telescope with a longer 3,951 mm focal length at an f/7.7 focal ratio, and a longer 269.24 mm back focus, that evenly illuminates a 45 mm image circle (with 16803-size camera sensors). It bridges the gap between amateur instruments and public-observatory-class systems.
